At last, the last update. I got the last country of this trip updated on the site. No more updates for a while, no trips planned for now. Ofcourse there are plans, but money and time will be a handicap for a while. After setteling in for a month I started looking for a job. No luck so far, but there we a job out there. Thank you all for reading and enjoying the site. I had a lot of fun making it.

Finaly, another update. I've got Letland (Latvia) and Estland (Estonia) for you to read and enjoy. Leaves me with Litouwen (Lithuania), which will up and running asap. As most of you might know, I had some bets with friends, So here (click here) are some of the pretty pictures of the Iranian made underwear and others, plus the pictures of my arival and surprise party.

I am settling in slowly, planning to start looking for a job. Yes, it will be back to working life for me sometime in the near future. I keep you posted. For now, I'm still in the holiday mood and like to keep it as long as possible.

Yes, I finally arived back in cold and rainy Holland. Last Saturday I flew from Vilnius to Amsterdam and family and friends were waiting for me at he airport. It was and is good seeing everybody again, though I wouldn't mind leaving again. Ta night there wa a surprise party with more friends and family. I had the best time in my live travelling the world and there is still so much to see and. feel sad it is over now. Though for all my fans, the site is offcourse not finished yet, so for you my trip continuos. I still have to put the photo's on there from the Philippines, Kyrghystan and Kazachstan. Plus the pages of the Baltics. I will try to do that this week. Though I am allready busy it must be done. If not for all the readers, than at least for myself. So be a little more patient and the updates will come.

Still in Latvia after a lot of rain in Estonia. Fixed the homepage, well actually had to make a complete new one. But it is almost done. So you can again read the stories and write in the guestbook. I also put the text in the Kyrghystan and Kazachstan pages, but not yet the photo's as the battery of my harddrive is not working properly. So I put them up later. So far enjoy the stories. I'm still enjoying he trip, though only 10 days lasting. Till the 6th.

I'm trying to get my page back to normal, but this might take some time. In yhe mean time I am travelling in Baltics. Colt, rain and a lot more expensive than I was used to. But the cities are beautiful, lot of culture. Only 12 days to go. Snik snik.

hello everybody. I'm working hard to get ,y next page up to date. Ubfortunatelly I have not found a internet place yet, which allow me to upload the photo's on the page. So, be a little bit patient. In the mean time I have arived in Kyrghystan a few days ago. The flight through China went without any problems, as was uptaining the visa for Kyrghystan at the airport. I am waiting now for my visa for Kazakhstan, which I can pick up next thursday. Unlucky for my in the last week in the Philipinnes I got a heavy infection in my right leg. So I can't walk that much. Went twice to the hospital in Laoag and Manila and today I have the idea all the medicans are finally kicking in. So, I hope when I get my visa I am able to walk around normally again. Luckely Bishkek is a nice place and the homestay I am at is full of travellers waiting for visa's and flights. I also booked my flight back home. For those who want to know, I arive in Amsterdam on September 6 at 9.05 Am with Air Lithuanian.

So, here a small in between update. I, enjoy the Philipines very much. Unbelievable friendly people. always smiling. Spend most of my time sofar in de mountains in Northern Luzon. Saw hanging Coffins, Mummies, skeletons etc. Plus beautiful rice terraces, protected by the Unesco, near Banaue. The mountains are great and impressive, but making traveling in the area very slow and hard. Bad roads and bad busses/jeepneys. But so far I'm loving it. I've got two weeks to go before I fly through China to Kyrchystan and looking forward to that. Yet an other culture to see.

Thanks all the people who leave their message in my geustbook. It surprises me how many people read it.

Ok, finally found a fast network connection. No, not in Indonesia, but during my short stop in Maleisia. Right, I finished the islands of smiles and I am now on my way to the Philipines. I loved Indonesia, thought not Bali, but more Flores, Lombok and Sumba. Especially the funeral in Sumba left a big impression. Hope you enjoy the stories and photo's and keep writing in the guestbook. Only 2,5 month to go.

Finally the update of Australia. Ok, I haven't left the country yet, but I don't think exciting things will happen. Coming weekend I will fly to Indonesia to see the islands of Lombok, Flores, Sunda and maybe Sulawesi. I, again, had a great time in Australia. Had enough time to meetup with all my friends here, BBQ's and biking through the city. Hope all will enjoy my page. And till next update. Oh, and here the promise to Zoltan

Hi everybody. Yes, I'm still in Australia. Relaxing and enjying this beautiful country. The most I did so far was a week of camping in Kalgoorlie. Saw the amazing hand made Superpit, this is the biggest open goldmine in the world. And the surealistic Lake Ballard, one of the foto's above. The last few weeks I tried to plan the rest of my trip. But luck is against me. To go through Russia I need a residence visa for more than 91 days in The country I apply in. So that didn't work out, as I only got a tourist visa for Australia. Now I tried the one for China, but due to all the problems in Tibet they keep changing the rules. Now you need to prove you pre-booked everything, hotels and flights, last news is that you can only apply in your home country. So, China is out of the picture aswell. Don't worry, I'm looking to great and good alternatives, Maybe spending a long time on the outer islands of Indonesia. Lombok, Flores and Sulawesi. So, busy busy busy, trying to figure it all out. In the mean time, I sorted out my photo's and made some categories for you to see. So you click on the names on the right and enjoy.

Sitting in the backyard of Els's neighbours, I'm trying to update the site. Unlucky, because everytime I upload a flag the explorer stops and I have to start all over again. But, okay, I will just finish without the flags for now and add them later. In the meantime, I'm almost two weeks in Oz and enjoying myself. It is good to rest, meet up with old friends, drink nice wines and not having to pack and unpack all the time. I even worked a few days. Yes really, I just helped Rick, brother inlaw of Paul, with hanging up curtains in a community center in an interesting small countrytown named Carnamah. Great fun and a very interresting night at the local pub. Besides that, I notice that Australia has changed a lot since the first time I came over in 1991. First for the good and to my idea, now for the bad. Prices are rising rapidly, food and housing is getting more and more expensive. The law is getting tighter, looking more and more as the Americans with their, over the top rules and regulations. To do volonteer work with kids you must need a certificate that you are allowed to by the goverment, so how can you have a birthday party for your kid if you

Why Iran?

When I decided to make a world trip the first thing I did was to plan a route. Where to go and what countries to visit. I didn't need to think hard about one country and that was Iran. Iran is since long one of the areas I want to visit, so I planned the trip along countries and areas I have not been before. Not through Turkey, like most backpackers do, but through Ukraine and the Caucasus. The stories of that part of the trip you might already have read. But why did I want to go to Iran? Land of deserts, terrorists, nuclear weapons (?), Taliban and danger. What is there to see and do? Well, let me start by saying that what I read and heard about Iran was only positive, except about the primeminister. It is one of the oldest countries in the world, it has fascinating nature and the most friendly people. This was for me reason enough to go and see for myself. And I can say Iran is going to be high on my list of favourite countries. Why? Simple. Nature is harsh, rough dry but oh so beautiful. Magnificent mountain ranges, isolated deserts and forests. Culture is of high standards. Beautiful mosques, palaces and castles. Cities like Esfehan are to compare with Rome and Paris. Persepolis is like Angkor What is in Cambodia. There is so much to see and do. The people are among the most friendly I have met, they want to talk to you, with nothing in return. Take you on a tour through their city, pay your taxi and tea and still they want nothing in return. I havenot seen man wearing white dresses and having long beards. They hate the Taliban, and having a long beard is not done. (Problem is, they hate Israel as well. One person told me that the Israeli ruled America and Europe and everybody is afraid of them, the only country that is free is Iran. Another said the holocaust was not true.) Most women try do dress modern within the rules of the Islam (see ..Chador or?), which most young people, I spoke to, detest. Most people I spoke to don't like their government and think it is wrong to make the rules of the Islam the law. They too think that religion and government should be separated. And don't like it that they can not be openly friendly with a girl or boy, and with this I mean they want to be able to walk hand in hand with the other sex or be able to kiss eachother and just date without being punished. Most Iranians feel oppressed by the government with their secret police and hard rules. The unemployment among young people is extremely high. Most men and women have a university degree, but are just happy to find a job in a store. Most want to go abroad to make money and come back rich, but man only get a passport after two years of military service. Most people are not happy about their situation, but they are still proud to be an Iranian. And are proud that there are people coming to their beautiful country to meet them. So when they see a tourist, they will treat you as their guest. So, even if you don't agree with Iranian politics (which I don't), the people are a definit reason to go. As in Myanmar, politics says nothing about the people, though this lunatic president does influence a lot of tourists to stay away.

Oké, het is weer even geleden, maar hier alvast een kleine update. Ik ben intussen uit Iran. Wat een machtig land. Wat een aardige mensen en zo veel te zien. Gastvrijheid staat daar hoog in het vaandel, kunnen we in de westerse wereld nog wat van leren. Afgelopen woensdag met 5 uur vertraging naar Sharjah gevlogen in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. Hier een taxi naar Dubai genomen ( 20 kilometer verder) en 2 dagen geshopt. De nodige kleding, schoenen en camera spullen. Het is een grote stad maar met een bizar slechte infrastructuur. Bussen 2 per uur, veel te weinig taxi's en geen metro. Wel interessant. Vanmorgen vroeg aangekomen in Chennai in India. Dit ligt in het zuiden en van hier ga ik langzaam richting Nepal waar ik ergens begin december hoop te zijn. Heb nog geen tijd voor de site update, maar dat zal niet lang op zich laten wachten.

Zo, ik ben al een aardig tijdje onderweg en vermaak me nog goed. Ben druk bezig de site te updaten, alleen de foto's lukken nog niet. Nog even geduld dus. Wel een update bij De Tien en ook de verhalen hebben er iets bij gekregen.

Ja, na alle soelaas om een visum voor Iran te krijgen, was de doaune de makkelijkste, die ik heb mee gemaakt. Zit nu dus in Iran en dat bevalt prima. Zie bijna geen toeristen wegens de Ramadan. Dat houdt in stiekem eten en drinken op de dag. Mensen zijn verschrikkelijk aardig en behulpzaam (op de enkele taxichauffeur na dan). Nemen je mee, betalen voor je, echt ongelooflijk. Ben nu al wel weer bezig om weg te komen. Ofwel een ticket naar India aan het regelen. Hoe dat gaat, dat weet ik de volgende keer.

Ja, sorry mensen het is alweer even geleden, maar hier dan weer een update. Zit momenteel te zweten in Yerevan in Armenië. Ben hier al een tijdje, druk bezig met het verkrijgen van een aantal visa. Vooral die van Iran is een beetje een probleem gebleken. Maar zoals het er nu naar uitziet, kan ik hem over een uurtje ophalen. Morgen kan ik dan het visum voor India ophalen. Daar ik hier toch moest wachten heb ik die ook maar gelijk geregeld. Daarnaast ben ik vandaag wat banken afgelopen om mijn verouderde en/of grekreukte dollars te wisselen voor gave en minder oude. Daar je in Iran alleen met dollars of Euro kan betalen. Tot vrijdag huis ik in het westerse en relaxte Yerevan en vertrek dan richting het zuiden van Armenië. Zo rond de 20ste hoop ik dan de grens met Iran over te steken. Ben ik maar 2 weken langer in Armenië gebleven dan gepland, maar het is een mooi land en Yerevan een goede stad om rond te hangen. Verder heb ik besloten om Pakistan rechts of links of in het midden te laten. Gezien de situatie momenteel zal ik van Teheran naar ergens in India vliegen. Waar??? Geen idee, ligt aan ticket.

Dan wil ik iedereen bedanken die mijn gastenboek gebruikt. Het is leuk en doet me goed om te weten dat de site goed gelezen wordt. Vooral de reacties uit onverwachte hoek zijn leuk. Dus schroom niet en schrijven maar.

Verder heb ik een pagina toe gevoegd en wel "De tien (meer of minder)..." in het kader van de 10 beste slechtste e.d. Heb er al wat bedacht, maar misschien weet je nog een uitdagende waar ik eens lekker over kan nadenken. Let wel, het moet wel betrekking op mijn reizen hebben. In de loop van de reis zal er best het een en ander veranderen of aangevuld worden. Van sommige dingen wist ik niet helemaal de naam meer, maar ik denk dat degene die erbij was mij wel wil helpen. Wordt vervolgd...

Wel het gaat u allen goed, net als met mij. Nog een klein jaar te gaan, tijd lijkt weer sneller te gaan, maar ik vermaak me nog goed.

Hallo daar, ben na enig omkopen van de douane van Azerbaijan in het hete en droge Azerbaijan. Douane had wat problemen met mijn dollars en helemaal met de Lonely Planet. Maar na het afkopen met 30 $ mocht ik toch door. De laatse 2 weken genoten van een mooi Georgië. Machtige natuur met kerken op waanzinnige plaatsen. Mensen aardig eten lekker, dus genoeg te doen. Deze week zit ik in Azerbaijan en rond het weekend ga ik nog even terug voor ik Armenië induik. Visum voor Iran heb ik nog steeds niet, hopelijk kan ik hem in Yerevan ophalen.. Dus scroll naar de vlag en lees de verhalen en bekijk de foto's.

Zo, we hebben er weer een stukje opzitten. Wat een prachtig land dat Oekraïne. Aardige mensen en in de Krim een fantastische natuur. Ook Lviv en Odessa zijn lekkere steden, relaxt en niet te groot in tegenstelling met Kiev. Ook mooi, maar toch. Heb het er best naar mijn zin gehad. Intussen zit de eerste maand er ruim op en denk ik nog niet over teruggaan. Ben druk bezig mijn visa te regelen voor Azerbaijan en Iran. Zal wel lukken. Ik zit nu in het wederom hete Tbilisi, aardige stad, kan alleen hier nog minder lezen dan in de Oekraïne. De site is bijna up to date, moet alleen nog foto's toevoegen, dat lukte hier even niet.

Voorlopig vermaak ik me nog wel.

Zo we zijn weer een tijdje verder en intussen zit ik in de Oekraine, aan de pc van de receptie van een internet cafe. Pc's zijn hier redelijk rap dus de page kan ik vrij snel bij werken. Heb net begrepen dat ik niet meer mee kan varen tussen de Oekraine en Georgie, zal dus naar een alternatief moeten kijken. Ja en intussen zit Slowakije er dus op, mooi land. Helaas heb ik niet al mijn foto's kunnen uploaden wegens problemen met een chip. Dus er zijn er meer, maar dit is het eventjes.

Op de 25ste de Oekraine ingegaan en dat is wel even wennen, je kan niets meer lezen en met spreekt bijna geen engels. Ook menu's zijn niet in het engels te krijgen, dus lang leven het Point It boekje. Vanavond ga ik met de nachttrein naar Kiev en vandaar naar Crimea aan de kust van de Zwarte Zee. Rond 5 augustus wil ik naar Georgie, maar hoe? weet ik dus nog niet.

Tjechië

Na op het station van Bodegraven van pa, ma, Ineke plus rest te hebben afscheid genomen, (Marjan gaat nog even gezellig mee naar Utrecht) begint eindelijk mijn reis. Het huis is klaar en schoon, maar het belangrijkste...verhuurd. Hoe het er volgend jaar bijstaat? Wie zal het zeggen! De avond ervoor nog met vrienden wezen eten. Erg gezellig, maar ik heb er wel een paar opdrachten bij, die ik dit jaar moet volbrengen. De eerste is niet zo moeilijk. Ik heb van Dennis en Pauline een fotocollage gehad die ik zo nu en dan op de foto moet zetten, dit in het kader dat zij (alle vrienden) er ook zijn geweest. En de eerste foto is er reeds, dus dat gaat goed. De tweede is een stuk moeilijker. Van Nico een echte BZ zwembroek gehad. Uitdaging is een dame te vinden die alleen met die zwembroek aan op de foto gaat, liefst met de collage of, nog moeilijker een nummerplaat. Oké, het was later op de avond, maar dit moet ergens wel gaan lukken. De derde opdracht ga ik misschien ook redden, een slip kopen voor Chantal in en made in Iran. En dit alles voor een goede fles whiskey. Nou is het maar goed, dat ik voor dit alles ruim de tijd heb, behalve voor die slip dan.

Maar goed, zaterdagavond dus vertrokken met de trein via Duisburg naar Praag. Om gelijk maar een beetje aan de wat mindere hygiene te wennen, drinken Marjan en ik nog wat tussen de muizen op Hoog Cathatijne. Als ik de grens met Duitsland over ben, komt de douane de trein in. Twee chagrijnige agenten, die zowaar ook mijn paspoort willen zien (twee in de hele coupé die gecheckt wordt). Er wordt zelfs nog over gebeld. Als ik in Duisburg door de gangen onder het spoor het perron loop te zoeken, ontstaat er vlak voor me een vechtpartij. Ik wil er langs, maar voor ik het weet wordt er geschoten. Toch maar even de dekking in. Als het voorbij is, zoek ik snel het perron op. Veilig in de trein deel ik een coupé met een invalide Rus uit Frankrijk. Ik weet gelijk zijn hele geschiedenis. In vergelijk met het eerste stuk met de trein zijn de stoelen een stuk minder comfortabel, slecht slapen dus.

Kortweg de vakantie/reis/avontuur is begonnen.

Jawel, de reis is dan eindelijk begonnen. Het eerste stukje Tsjechië, sorry krijg de puntjes er niet op, zit erop. Wat een mooi land, alhoewel ik iets minder van Praag onder de indruk was dan verwacht. Wel een mooie stad hoor. Na Praag nog wel wat meer van het land gezien. Persoonlijk vond ik Adsrpach erg mooi, dit is een natuurgebied aan de grens met Polen. Verder wonen in Tsjechië fijne mensen, maar zijn er wel erg veel toeristen, vooral in Praag. Daar kun je erover lopen.

Heb intussen een internetcafé gevonden waar je voor met het kopen van een drankje gratis kunt internetten. Zal morgen terugkomen en de pagina van Tsjechië afmaken met foto s enzo. Marjan, je ziet dat niet alle puntjes lukken, stomme toetsenborden hier.

Druk bezig de boel aan kant te krijgen, inentingen regelen ( ben ik schijnbaar wat laat mee ), huis verhuren en leegmaken, verenigingen afronden. Etentje hier etentje daar, nog wat verjaardagen. Kortom ik heb het druk genoeg. Planning is om rond 8 juli te vertrekken en dan zoveel mogelijk over land te reizen naar Australië. Landen die op het schema staan zijn: Tjechië, Slowakije, Oekraïne, Georgië, Azerbaijan, Armenië, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, China, Laos, Thailand, Maleisië, Australië, Borneo, Filipijnen en Taiwan. Of dat allemaal in een jaar lukt? Wie zal het zeggen, ik heb er in ieder geval zin in.

about...

...Children?

As I'm travelling now for quit some time I keep wondering about all these tourist families I see walking around. When I write this, I am in Malaysia at the end of february, travelling allmost eight month. Just about every day I have seen families with school going kids. Boys and girls from eight to eighteen wondering the streets with mom and dad. Now I know that is none of my business and that people are free to travel. But...don't they have school? In Holland is allmost impossible to get your kids out of school one day before the holidays start. Still I do meet Dutch families, though most are english or australian. Still I cannot believe that schools there give weeks of to there students. So, what is there privilage? Are they expats on leave? Do they live here? But even then they have got to go to school. Are they educated by there parents? Or are they just illegal travelling? I just don't know, but it keeps me wondering.

...Travelentertainment?

I don't know if this is one word, but it definitely feels like it. So you think, 'what about travelentertainment'? Most people who have taken a long flight know a tiny little bit what I mean. During the flight you can watch a movie or when flying the better airlines you can even choose your own film or game, showing in the seat in front of you. In a plane they call it inflight entertainment, but how do you call it in a boat or bus? So travelentertainment. When you take a long distance bus in most countries they won't you to get boards, so they build in a tv and show movies. Now there is a variaty in what you will see and hear. So, a little info about that. When you travel in Mexico I saw a dutch litarary movie. In India you get a lot of loud bollywood or Tamil movie. In Indonesia I ones saw a chinese version of An officer and a gentleman. In Laos they love karaoke, loudly. So far so good, then you also get less 'relaxing' movies. In Maleisia they entertain you with Rambo 4 and other bloodthirsty movies. On the boat from Sibu to Kuching on Borneo we got entertained with four hours of All Star wrestling and Wrestlemania. Can it get worse? Yes, when I took a bus at eight in the morning in Guatemala they where showing a very bloody horrorflick, nice for the little kids sitting in the bus. So travelentertainment, it can be oke, but sometimes....
